Karbovanets (карбованець) — the historic name for Ukraine's currency, from the word meaning to notch or to carve a tally.

The karbovanets has deep roots in Ukrainian monetary history. The word itself comes from the ancient practice of carving notches into tally sticks to record debts and transactions — a pre-bank, pre-institution system of keeping accounts that belonged to the people who made the marks.

Karbo carries this heritage forward. Where tally sticks were carved wood, Karbo is carved mathematics. The ledger is distributed across thousands of machines. The marks cannot be erased, altered, or confiscated. The history is the record, and the record belongs to no one.

“Karbovanets” was also a distinct unit of currency in Ukraine during different periods of its history. We brought that name back in digital form as an unofficial and independent exchange medium.
